Contentment
(back to the index of emotions)
Below are entries where contentment is significant.
I think contentment is very different from happiness. Happiness has become an industry - we’re all supposed to be striving to be happy. But it’s a false goal that’s being set-up. We are better off thinking of happiness as fleeting - enjoyable, but temporary. | Contentment, on the other hand, can be lasting, ongoing. It doesn’t have to be limitless to be valid as a notion: I can be broadly content with my day-to-day life, but discontent with some specific element. It’s a question of balance; discontentment mustn’t be overwhelming. |
